Maieutica is a tutor that asks what you want to learn, reads your sources, and teaches you one step at a time.

Every step is a document you keep. Nothing is graded, and nobody is sent a report of what you learn. Only you say what you can do.

A free app for your computer · needs a paid Claude plan or an Anthropic API key · Sample version 0.1.0, about 120 MB

What makes it different

Its name comes from maieutics, Socrates' art of helping someone find what they want to know by asking them.

  1. It is yours

Not assigned, not graded, no manager view. The record is a folder on your computer, or in a cloud folder of your own.

  2. It is grounded

It reads your sources first, names them, and says what it could not read.

  3. It admits its limits

Where the knowledge lives with a colleague, it prepares the conversation with them instead of pretending to teach it.

  4. Only you attest

"Taught" is your tutor's claim. "I can do this" is yours, and only yours marks a module as learnt.

  5. What it writes outlives it

Every step is a document that stands on its own. Copy the folder, keep it, hand it on; it still teaches without the app.

You need
A Claude account from Anthropic. Your tutor is Claude, and without an account Maieutica cannot teach. Either a paid Claude plan, which you sign in to from the app, or your own Anthropic API key, billed per use.
Costs
Maieutica is free. What your tutor does is paid to Anthropic, by your plan or your key.

Richard Keiser, Zurich, Switzerland. The Windows installers are not signed yet, so Windows names no publisher: check the file's checksum before you run it.
Space
About 400 MB once installed, and room for your curricula.

Windows

Sample Checked on Windows 10 and Windows 11, 64-bit. No administrator rights: it installs for you alone.

Maieutica-0.1.0-setup.exe · 118 MB

What Windows shows the first time

Windows does not know a new file yet, and the installer is not signed, so Windows stops it once:

  1. "Windows protected your PC" appears. Click More info.
  2. It says Publisher: Unknown publisher. That is expected while the installers are not signed, so first check the file: its SHA-256 must be the one listed for it under Every version (how).
  3. If it matches, click Run anyway. If it does not, delete the file: it is not the one published here.

Linux

Sample Checked on Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04, 64-bit.

maieutica_0.1.0_amd64.deb · 121 MB

The .deb opens in your software installer. An update to it asks for your computer's password, possibly twice.

Check that the file is the one published here

Each file's SHA-256 checksum is in its version below. Compare it with what your computer computes from the file in your Downloads folder. Capital and small letters count as the same.

Windows, in PowerShellGet-FileHash "$HOME\Downloads\Maieutica-*-setup.exe"

Linux, in a terminalsha256sum ~/Downloads/maieutica_*_amd64.deb

Every version

Every version stays here, with what it changed. A file is never replaced under the same version: a fix is a new version.

What is seen, and by whom

This page
Sets no cookies, counts no visitors and loads nothing from anyone else: no analytics, no fonts from a font service. GitHub serves it, and sees your address as any web host does. Nobody here receives a record of it.
Updates
The app checks for a new version when it starts and once a day, by reading one small file from GitHub. GitHub sees your computer's network address and the time of each check. The app tells you this before its first check, and you can turn checks off. Nothing is downloaded until you agree.
What you write
What you tell your tutor, and what it reads for you, goes to Anthropic, which runs the model, under your plan's or your key's terms. Your tutor also opens the web pages and searches you allow, and any service you connect to a curriculum; the app shows you each one. Your record stays in your folder.
